Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Senegal’s President-elect, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on his election as the President of the Republic of Senegal.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised Faye’s emergence as a leader with great promise and an impressive record, wishing him success in his new role leading the people of Senegal.
President Tinubu also commended outgoing President Macky Sall for overseeing an election that has been widely praised for its peaceful and transparent conduct. He emphasised that the successful Senegal election is a testament to the efforts of the sub-regional organisation in promoting peace, constitutional order, and strengthening ties among member states.
Highlighting the significance of the Senegal election and the recent general election in Liberia, President Tinubu expressed his belief that democracy’s roots in West Africa are being solidified. He stressed that this foundation will only be strengthened further through good governance, justice, and fairness for all.
As the Chair of ECOWAS, President Tinubu reassured the people of Senegal of Nigeria’s support and congratulated them on the successful election.
Millions of Senegalese nationals participated in a peaceful vote on Sunday, resulting in Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s victory over the incumbent, Macky Sall. Faye, a Senegalese politician and former tax inspector born in 1980, now holds the distinction of being West Africa’s youngest democratically elected President.
