The Nigeria Union of Journalists have condemned in strangest terms, the attack on one of their members and reporter with Vanguard Newspaper, Dennis Agbo over the weekend.

Journalist101 recalls that Agbo alongside 4 others escaped death by whiskers after land grabbers in his village mobilized thugs to beat them up.

The Enugu chapter of the NUJ in a statement issued on Monday said the attack is uncalled for and their member has enough evidence to prove that the land belongs to their family to the extent that his uncle was buried on the land.

The statement which was signed by the duo of the chairman of the Enugu Council, Comrade Sam Udekwe and the secretary Dame Ifeoma Amuta called on the police command to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that preparators of the attack are brought to book.

The statement reads:

“NUJ Enugu State Council condemns attack on its Member and wants the police Commissioner of Police in the state to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring justice to member.

“The matter which is said to have been brought to command’s notice is a very serious one which cannot be swept under the carpet.

“On Sunday 21/4/24 the Nigeria Union of Journalists Enugu State Council received the unpleasant news of attack on one of its members and Vanguard reporter, Mr Dennis Agbo who was beaten to stupor by suspected thugs from Neke over a land dispute at Ugwuokwunele Umuaram in Ikem, Isiuzo Local government Area of Enugu State.

“The union while condemning the attack in its entirety wonders why such dastardly act should be meted out to a young man who had proof of ownership of his family’s land to the extent that his late Uncle the owner was buried on the land.

“We call for justice and want all the thugs and their sponsor(s) brought to book while our colleague reclaims his land.

“The Union looks forward to a very positive and fruitful result after investigation on the matter and justice for the Vanguard reporter.”
