The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, office in Umuahia, Abia State capital was on Monday, sealed by the enforcement team of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.
The EEDC office, situated at Bende Road, opposite the Umuahia North LGA secretariat, was locked with a big padlock by the NLC team, which arrived at the place at about 10: 20 am.
Pasted on the gate of the EEDC office, were placards listing the alleged failures of the power distributor.
Some of the placards read, “DISCOs are reaping where they did not sow, ” the abysmal performance of DISCOs is no longer acceptable” and NERC is no longer serving the masses, among other reasons.
Led by Okoro Ogbonnaya, Abia State Chairman of NLC, the organized labour called for the reversal of electricity tariff to 65KWN and also demanded a reduction in high tariffs, and also called for the provision of prepaid meters for electricity consumers in Abia State.
Speaking on the exercise, Abia NLC Chairman, Okoro Ogbonnaya said the directive to seal the EEDC office was issued by the national headquarters of NLC.
” It is a directive from the national union. The DISCOs are not supplying power in accordance with the bills they are giving”
He slammed the power distributors for not providing quality service to consumers, decrying that electricity consumers were being ripped off.
It was a dramatic scene after the NLC left the scene, as some marketing staff of EEDC were seen standing outside the locked gate to collect bill payments from customers with PoS machines while some others squatted in nearby shops.
