The Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi has reacted to the statement credited to Mr. Atiku Abubakar on the possibility of a merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recall that Atiku in an interview with BBC Hausa service, said a merger is very possible and he wouldn’t have any problem supporting Mr. Obi if its zoned to South East

Obi in his reaction, commended Atiku saying he will support him (Obi) if the ticket is zoned to South East.

Saying he’s not against any merger, the former Anambra State governor said “as long as any merger is for better, new Nigeria and governing properly, I’m for it. If it’s just merger for election or state capture, I’m not part of it.”

He stressed that he wants to be part of anything that will see Nigeria work as he’s not “desperate to be president” but “desperate to see Nigeria work especially for the poor people because we’ve a lot of potential.”

“So, if the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it. It might be at party level, at individual level or any level but we must together to be able to build a better Nigeria.”
