EXCERPTS:
Hon. Osita Okoh, One year of Impactful
Representations and the Journey So Far
“Innovation does not entail having new ideas, but rather getting rid of the old belief”
The above was the driving force when we set out to run for the seat of the Enugu East Urban Constituency at Enugu House of Assembly.
We believe that our people deserved more and the only way we could meet their desire was to bring good governance to their doorstep.
It’s one year already and I want to thank God, my family, and the good people of Enugu East Local Government Urban Constituency for their unrivalled support and to also tell them what we have been able to do within this short period.
LEGISLATIVE DUTIES
It’s important to state that the core duties of a legislator are; Representation, Legislation and Oversight.
Immediately after our inauguration, the house kick-started its business on the 20th of June 2023 and since then, I have attended all the legislative sessions of the House for the past one year.
Also, alongside my colleagues in the House, we have enacted some laws to enable the State Government to deliver democracy dividends to Ndi Enugu. And finally, after our inauguration, I was privileged to be appointed the Chairman of the House Committee on Labour and Civil Service Matters and also member of the House Committees on land; Health; Works and Infrastructure; and Enugu Capital Territory.
So far, we have discharged our oversight responsibilities creditably.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
After our inauguration, I employed some of my constituents to enable me run my office and also earn a living. I wish to say that I was among the first set of lawmakers that gave appointment letters to my constituents. As at today, I have over 22 persons on my monthly payroll.
INFRASTRUCTURE
I understand the level of deplorable conditions of the road within my Constituency and it is my pleasure to announce that some of these roads have been reconstructed and some are still under reconstruction. The road from ShopRite to Trans-ekulu has been completely reconstructed, The road linking Abakpa girls to Nowas Junction has also been completely reconstructed and the road linking Nowas to Abakpa Market is 80 per cent completed.
This massive road reconstruction within my Constituency is a testament to the healthy relationship that exist between us and the Executive Governor and I sincerely appreciate our dear Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his concerns on the issues that affect my constituents.
MEDICAL OUTREACH
During my campaign, one of the promises I made to my people is to ensure that they are provided with some medical assistance. To make this promise a reality, I partnered with Rotary Club of Enugu to carry out medical outreach at Nkwo Nike where over 500 persons benefitted.
In my own personal way, I have also helped some indigent constituents to clear off their medical bills at Parklane.
EDUCATION
We all know how important education is to us as a people, hence this is one of the sectors I have invested so much in because I know that education equips an individual with the right knowledge to better his or her life. It is our dependable arsenal against poverty.
This, in September 2023, I did Back to School outreach for the pupils within my Constituency. During my last birthday, I paid WAEC fees for over 20 students spread across Abakpa Girls Secondary school; National Grammar School, Nike; Trans-Ekulu Girls; Agama Secondary School; Modern Ideal College (MIC); and Tripple C Success School.
Meanwhile, the relationship that exists between me and my party members has been most cordial. They have been so supportive.
During the Christmas period, I bought 150 bags of bags of rice and shared among the party executives and other party members. I also did a Christmas outreach to some traders and market women, while also equally distributing 50 bags of rice among widows.
I can also recall the sad fire incident that happened at Ugbo Oghe a few months ago. I was there to sympathize with the victims and gave them N300,000 to support them.
Let me take this opportunity to thank everyone, who has been there for me through the years, and especially since I emerged as House of Assembly Member representing our people. I want to assure my constituents that we are just getting started. It’s just morning on creation day. I will never let you down nor will I ever take your goodwill for granted.
So, fasten your seat belts as we continue on this consequential journey of development.
