Enugu Rangers have been crowned the winners of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for 2023/2024 season after a commanding 2-0 victory over Bendel Insurance FC at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu State.

The win took Rangers to an unassailable 67 points at the summit of the table after their closest rivals Remo Stars and Enyimba lost 2-1 to Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos, respectively.

The victory means that the Enugu side has now won the league for a record eight times.

At the week 37 game which took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu christened ‘The Cathedral’ Rangers took control of the game in the 33rd minute with a strike from Agu Kenechukwu. Bendel FC struggled to find their rhythm and spent much of the half on the defensive.

In the second half, Bendel FC tried to stage a comeback, but Rangers’ defense remained steadfast. The crucial moment came in the 65th minute when midfielder Chidiebere Nwobodo netted a spectacular goal, doubling Rangers’ lead and sealing the victory. Bendel FC’s efforts to get back into the game were continually thwarted by Rangers’ solid defense.

At the final whistle, jubilant celebrations erupted both on the field and in the stands. Fans flooded the streets of Enugu, reveling in their team’s success. This triumph not only brings honor to the club but also to the entire state, marking their 8th league title and reflecting the dedication and hard work of the players, coaching staff, and management.

After the match, Enugu Rangers’ head coach, Ilechukwu Fidelis, lauded his team’s performance and commitment throughout the season.

“This victory is a testament to the hard work and determination of our players. They have shown exceptional skill and resilience, and I am incredibly proud of them. We dedicate this win to our amazing fans who have supported us every step of the way.”

With this victory, Enugu Rangers have not only secured the NPFL title but also earned a place in the prestigious CAF Champions League, where they will compete against Africa’s top clubs. The team is already looking forward to the upcoming challenges and opportunities, aiming to build on this success and maintain their winning momentum.
