The ongoing standoff in Rivers state political landscape has claimed the lives of a policeman and a member of the state vigilante.

The renewed crisis followed the refusal of the local government chairmen their tenures expired on June 17th, 2024 to handover.

The local government Chairmen that are loyal to the minister of the FCT,  Nyesom Wike insisted that they won’t resign on the argument that the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly had extended their tenure by six months.

The youths of the state besieged the various council headquarters, insisting that that the Chairmen must handover and leave as directed by the governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The unrest according to reports claimed the two lives in Omuma Local Government Area on Tuesday following the invasion of the council headquarters at Eberi-Omuma.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday night, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said two deaths were recorded.

She said a policeman and a vigilante operative lost their lives in the crisis.

When pressed for further details, she said investigations have commenced and more details would be released soon.
