…as CP Kanayo warns criminals involved in similar acts to turn over a new leaf
A transformer vandal identified as Nwode Sunday has lost his life while attempting to steal transformer armoured cables belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) on Friday, 27th June, 2024.
Nwode, a 19-year-old resident of Ngwo Camp 2, Coal Camp, Enugu was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise the transformer located around Missionary Avenue, Coal Camp, Enugu.
Confirming the development, the Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh said that “the incident as tragic and very unfortunate”, adding that “from all indications, it is presumed that power supply must have been restored while the deceased was cutting the armoured cables, which resulted in his being electrocuted.
Ezeh lamented the increasing rate at which “vandals attack electricity installations within EEDC’s network daily. This is a development that has adversely impacted not just the quality of service to its customers but also its revenue.”
He further said that vandalism has been a big challenge to the company, and there is no way this can be addressed without the support of critical stakeholders.
“It is a battle we all have to fight collectively because once these transformers are vandalised, customers who are served by the installation will be greatly affected,” Ezeh said.
He therefore appealed to customers to join hands with the company to ensure that these facilities within their neighbourhoods are protected.
While also confirming the development, Enugu State commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+) in a terse statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe said; “The lifeless body of the suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead, and the corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation.
CP Uzuegbu further “warned criminals involved in such criminal acts to turn over a new leaf to avoid facing the full weight of the law, or suffering similar unfortunate fate as the suspect at issue.”
