The Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance, a civil society organization, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to investigate Nigeria’s crude oil production.
The organization alleges discrepancies in the figures recently announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
In a petition signed by Collins Eshiofeh (National President) and Mohammed Grema Adamu (Secretary General), the CSO claims that the NNPCL’s figures contradict the actual amount of crude oil produced daily.
They demand an investigation to reconcile these discrepancies and ensure transparency in the oil sector.
The petition was submitted on Tuesday to the EFCC and ICPC, with a copy also sent to the Senate President, urging the agencies to probe the matter and ensure accountability in the oil sector.
It reads, “We write to draw your attention to the irregularities in the figures announced by the NNPCL.
“The NNPCL recently announced a figure of 1.6 million barrels per day, but allegations suggest the true figure is around two million barrels per day. This discrepancy has worried Nigerians, who question the irregularities and demand the truth.
“As the country’s economic mainstay, we urge you to investigate this matter, ensure that the declared barrels match the actual production, and prevent revenue leakages for the sake of our nation’s economic well-being.”
The group also questioned the effectiveness of security outfits in protecting national assets, given the alleged oil theft and vandalism.
They called for the use of modern technology to monitor crude oil production and prevent revenue leakages.
“We ask, what role are these security outfits playing? Which facilities are they protecting? Nigerians demand an answer.
“The National Assembly should immediately direct the management of NNPCL to use the latest modern technology to keep accurate data on our crude oil production quantities,” the group stated.
