The Nigerian Senate has expressed profound sorrow and regret over the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented the Anambra South Senatorial District until his untimely demise.
In a statement released by Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu, the late lawmaker is hailed as an exemplary leader, a committed public servant, and an unyielding advocate for his constituents. The Upper Chamber emphasized that his death marks a significant loss for the Senate, his community, and the nation. “Before entering public service, Senator Ubah was a distinguished businessman and philanthropist whose contributions will be sorely missed.”
Ifeanyi Ubah had made a name for himself as a successful businessman and philanthropist before his political career. As the founder and CEO of Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited, he significantly influenced Nigeria’s energy sector, fostering economic growth and generating numerous jobs. Through the Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, his philanthropic initiatives offered critical support to the underprivileged, providing scholarships, healthcare, and other essential services that transformed countless lives.
Throughout his time in the Senate, Ubah exemplified unwavering dedication to the advancement of Anambra South and Nigeria at large. He was a beacon of hope, a champion for economic empowerment, and a steadfast advocate for legislative reforms aimed at enhancing the lives of all Nigerians.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio conveyed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “Senator Ifeanyi Ubah was a devoted and passionate legislator who left an indelible mark on our country. His commitment to his constituents and his contributions in the Senate were exemplary.” Akpabio noted that Ubah would be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him, adding, “The Nigerian Senate extends its deepest sympathies to Senator Ubah’s family, friends, constituents, and the Government and people of Anambra State. Meanwhile, scant information is emerging about the circumstances surrounding Senator Ubah’s death early Saturday morning in London, with sources close to the family indicating it was cardiac-related.
Ubah had a close brush with death in the lead-up to the 2023 elections when his convoy was ambushed in Enugu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the tragic death of six policemen who were accompanying him.
Despite this harrowing experience, he successfully contested and won the election, later announcing his defection from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Those close to him noted a significant change in his personal lifestyle, including a marked reduction in his weight.
The two-term senator was, until his death at the age of 52, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream.
