Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have arrested a man for inciting violence ahead of a planned nationwide protest against hunger and poor governance in Nigeria.

Suleiman Yakubu, a 34-year-old, appeared in a video posted on his TikTok account under the username “Dam-Mallam68.” In the video, he was seen assertively urging the public to attack security personnel and destroy essential state and private infrastructure in Plateau State as part of the protest, according to a statement from the police command.

The statement, signed by Police Command spokesperson DSP Alabo Alfred, detailed that Yakubu’s arrest occurred on Ahmadu Bello Way in Jos, following the deployment of tactical assets of the command by Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina.

 The statement reads:

“In response to a TikTok video that sparked widespread concern on social media for inciting violence related to the upcoming nationwide protest, the Plateau State Police Command launched an operation to apprehend the video’s creator.

On 27 July 2024, the command became aware of the video originating from a TikTok account labeled ‘Dam-Mallam68.’

The suspect was observed inciting viewers to attack security forces and vandalize critical state and private facilities in Plateau State as part of the protest’s activities.

Acting on this information, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina activated tactical teams to trace and apprehend the source of this harmful video.

Consequently, on 28 July 2024 at approximately 11:30 AM, Suleiman Yakubu, a resident of Jos North, Plateau State, was arrested on Ahmadu Bello Way based on credible intelligence.

While in custody, Yakubu admitted to being the person in the incendiary video. Investigations are ongoing.

In light of these events, the Commissioner of Police emphasizes that the force will vehemently oppose any attempts by troublemakers to destabilize the state. He reiterated the importance of maintaining peace before, during, and after the protest.

The Commissioner also urges the residents of Plateau State to uphold the law and avoid making incendiary remarks that could jeopardize the peace and security of the community.
