Peter Obi

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, stated that although some perceive him as weak, he remains committed, focused, and respectful.

Obi made these remarks in Awka over the weekend during the installation of Prof. Au. Kenmdilim Nonyelu as the 8th District Governor of Rotary International, District 9142. He was responding to allegations from former supporter Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo, who accused him of failing to assert control over the Labour Party.

Acknowledging the perception of weakness that has followed him since the beginning of his political journey, Obi expressed that such views do not deter him. He emphasized his dedication to staying focused, maintaining respect for others, and remaining undistracted so long as he believes he is on the right path. “I have never engaged in the politics of ‘tigbue zogbue’ (violence), and I will not start now,” he asserted.

Regarding the proposed demonstration against hardships and poor governance in the country, Obi advised Nigerians to refrain from trying to influence or dictate the actions of the youth. He denied ever contemplating or supporting such protests and pointed out that hunger, unemployment, inflation, corruption, poverty, looting, and lack of accountability are driving factors behind the protests.

Obi cautioned that while the youth should be free to express their views and pursue their goals, their actions must comply with the law. He urged them to engage peacefully and constructively, emphasizing the importance of informed and organized activities for meaningful change. He encouraged young people to understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens and to use constitutional means to voice their concerns.

Additionally, Obi called on older generations and leaders to listen to the youth and support their endeavors, highlighting that young people are often the most affected by ineffective leadership. He argued that respecting the youth’s autonomy and providing them with opportunities to lead and contribute is essential for the nation’s development, innovation, and progress.
