The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has dismissed allegations that one of his spokespersons, Kenneth Okonkwo, who recently announced his withdrawal from the party, was a mole.

Okonkwo had released a statement on Sunday announcing that he was severing his political ties with Peter Obi and exiting the party.

He explained that his decision to leave stemmed from Obi’s failure to address the party’s internal crisis, adding that Obi had shown no capacity to defend the people’s mandate.

“I no longer have confidence that Peter Obi has what it takes to build a party capable of defeating these kakistocrats and kleptocrats. Above all, he has proven that even if the people vote for him, he lacks the ability to secure the mandate,” Okonkwo stated in a post on his X account.

His announcement drew criticism from various quarters, including the Labour Party, which labeled him a mole.

In response, spokesperson for the Peter Obi Media Outreach, Yunusa Tanko, quoted Obi as saying he was sad about the development, as he views Okonkwo as a younger brother who played his role diligently during their struggle.

Yunusa added that Obi does not have an issue with Okonkwo; rather, they simply have differing views on “style and approach to problems.”

Below is Yunusa’s statement:

“Following the announcement from Kenneth Okonkwo, the former Spokesperson of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organization for the 2023 election, regarding his departure from both the Labour Party and the Obidients, I, as Chief Spokesman of the Campaign, contacted our principal, Obi, for his reaction. He expressed sadness over the situation, stating that he sees Okonkwo as a younger brother who diligently played his role during our struggle.

“When I asked Obi if I could make his views on Okonkwo public, he agreed, emphasizing that the public needs to understand there is no personal misunderstanding between us. Instead, it’s just a disagreement based on style and approach to problems.”
