Ahead of the August 1st hardship protest in Nigeria, Igbo youths in the South South region have called for calm while proposing steps to restore citizens’ confidence.
In a statement from the Youth Coordinator of Ohaneze Ndigho South South, Chief Arthur Ugwa, the youths urged the federal government to urgently implement economic stimulus packages, ensure transparency in governance, and pay attention to education.
Chief Ugwa emphasized that these suggestions, “if urgently implemented by the Federal Government, could significantly alleviate economic hardships and restore public confidence.”
The suggestions are as follows:
Economic Stimulus Package: The Federal Government should introduce a comprehensive economic stimulus package aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This package should include low-interest loans, grants, and tax relief to help businesses recover and thrive, thereby creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
Agricultural Support and Subsidies: Given Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential, there is an urgent need for increased support and subsidies for farmers. This should include providing modern farming equipment, access to affordable credit, and improved infrastructure for the storage and transportation of agricultural produce. Enhancing the agricultural sector will not only ensure food security but also provide employment for millions of Nigerians.
Revamping the Education Sector: Investment in the education sector is crucial for long-term economic development. The government should prioritize funding for educational institutions, improve the quality of education, and ensure that vocational training centers are well-equipped. This will prepare the youth for the job market and help reduce the high unemployment rate.
Improvement of Healthcare Services: The health sector requires urgent attention to improve the quality of services provided. The government should increase funding for healthcare, ensure the availability of essential drugs and medical equipment, and improve working conditions for healthcare professionals. Access to quality healthcare is fundamental to maintaining a productive workforce.
Transparency and Accountability in Governance: To rebuild public trust, the government must demonstrate a commitment to transparency and accountability. This includes the efficient management of public funds, tackling corruption, and ensuring that public services are delivered effectively. Establishing independent bodies to monitor and report on government projects and expenditures will help achieve this goal.
He urged relevant stakeholders to “embrace these suggestions and engage the Federal Government in meaningful dialogue.”
