The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has shared his heart-wrenching experience during his last moments with music icon Onyeka Onwenu, describing it as “devastating.”
Journalist101 reports that the Elegant Stallion, Onwenu passed away on Tuesday at Reddington Hospital in Lagos, shortly after performing at the birthday party of Stella Okoli.
Obi, who was present at the event, recounted how the iconic music star performed several of her songs, culminating in her famous anthem, “One Love Keep Us Together.”
In a post on his X account, the former Governor of Anambra reflected on the tragic unpredictability of that evening, stating, “We never knew it would be her final bow.” He recounted how he “watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly to save her, doing everything possible to bring her back to us, but ultimately delivering the heartbreaking news that she was gone. Despite their valiant efforts, she passed away after more than two hours of intense struggle.”
Expressing his gratitude to those who joined them at the hospital, Mr. Obi extended his condolences to her family.
He shared, “Yesterday marked an incredibly devastating moment for me as I witnessed a tragic event that will forever be etched in my memory. I was present at the event where the legendary Onyeka Onwenu performed several songs, ending with her beloved ‘One Love Keep Us Together.’
“It was a beautiful performance, yet little did we know it would be her final bow. Mere minutes after her performance, she sat down, took a sip of water, and suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital.
“I followed her there and watched in anguish as the doctors and medical staff fought valiantly to save her, doing everything possible to restore her life. Sadly, they ultimately delivered the devastating news that she was gone. Despite their relentless efforts, she succumbed after more than two hours of intense struggle.
“My heart goes out to her children, family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. May we find the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss.
“Onwenu was a national treasure, a shining star who inspired generations with her music, activism, and unwavering dedication to the arts. Her passing is a tremendous loss for the entire nation, and she will be deeply missed.
“I wish to thank everyone who accompanied us to the hospital yesterday, especially Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, and Mr. Okpara, who were with her during her final moments. Governor Alex Otti also joined us, along with Mr. Femi Ajayi, who returned to the hospital this morning to help us finalize arrangements regarding her passing. May her soul rest in peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire and unite us all.
