…Urges Enugu citizens not to be manipulated
The Enugu State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says they’ve uncovered sinister plots by the leadership of the two opposition parties in the state to exploit the proposed nationwide protest and instigate instability in the state.
In a statement released on Wednesday by its state Chairman, Hon. Augustine Nnamani, the party urged the Federal Government and security agencies to hold the leadership of both parties accountable for any breach of peace occurring “in the name of protest” in the state.
The statement reads, “The PDP possesses credible intelligence revealing a sinister plot by the leadership of the Labour Party in Enugu State, and their new allies in the Enugu APC, aimed at causing instability under the guise of nationwide protests.
“This intelligence indicates that these opposition leaders are alarmed by the rising popularity of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, attributed to his impressive developmental and infrastructural achievements over the past 14 months.
“They see the nationwide protest as an opportunity to undermine the state and retaliate against the governor for the losses they suffered in the 2023 elections.
“In addition to creating chaos, their scheme seeks to portray Governor Mbah as orchestrating protests against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Therefore, we call upon the Federal Government and security agencies to hold the leadership of the Enugu APC and LP fully accountable for any breach of peace in the state under the pretext of protest, especially considering that key stakeholders, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Worldwide, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, and presidents-general of town unions, along with numerous business owners, have distanced themselves from the proposed protest and are advocating for dialogue instead, due to the devastation and chaos that plagued the state during the EndSARS protests.”
The PDP in Enugu State urged the public to continue their legitimate activities and “not allow themselves to be used by political failures who are determined to incite strife in the state under the guise of protest. They must accept that the 2023 election has been settled and, just as in the last gubernatorial election, the people of Enugu State will prioritize capacity, pedigree, track record, and character in 2027, rather than empty propaganda and bitter rhetoric.”
It is worth noting that the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, recently raised concerns during a meeting with various stakeholders, warning of plots by unnamed individuals to hijack the protest, leading to chaos and destruction of public and private property in the state.
