A group of protesters participating in the nationwide demonstration against hardship set up a bonfire in front of Government House, Kano, on Thursday morning.
Demonstrators from various parts of the metropolis gathered at Government House, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was scheduled to address them.
As they approached the gate, some protesters piled up tyres and set them ablaze.
In response, security operatives at Government House fired gunshots and deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The ensuing chaos caused the protestors to flee in different directions.
