In the wake of a deadly explosion that claimed the lives of 16 people and left several others critically injured, the Borno State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew across the state.
Similarly, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf declared a 24-hour curfew on Thursday in response to escalating violence during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
In Borno, Governor Professor Babagana Umar Zulum made the announcement after consulting with the heads of the security agencies operating in the state.
The explosion in Borno occurred in the Kawori area, triggered by an improvised explosive device, leading to the tragic incident. Victims were rushed to various government hospitals in the state for medical attention.
According to Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the curfew is aligned with the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to preserve law and order in the state.
“His Excellency the executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with heads of security in the state, finds it expedient to declare a 24-hour curfew with immediate effect,” Daso stated.
The police spokesperson urged the people of Borno State to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that further developments will be communicated accordingly.
This incident adds to a series of security challenges faced by the state, which has struggled with the activities of Boko Haram insurgents for over a decade. The curfew is seen as a necessary measure to restore normalcy and prevent further loss of life.
In Kano, the government announced the curfew in a statement issued on Thursday, following reports of vandalism, assault, and looting of private and government properties across the Kano metropolis under the guise of protest.
“This action is meant to ensure the safety of lives and property,” Governor Yusuf emphasized.
The protest, which began peacefully, quickly descended into disorder, prompting the state government to intervene. Governor Yusuf’s declaration mandated that all residents remain indoors for the duration of the curfew.
“All security agencies in the state are hereby directed to ensure full and immediate compliance,” Governor Yusuf declared, assigning law enforcement agents the responsibility of enforcing the curfew and maintaining public order.
The governor also appealed to the public for vigilance and calm, urging citizens to cooperate with authorities during this critical period.
