The police command in Enugu State has commended residents for maintaining calm and refraining from participating in the nationwide hunger protests.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Enugu on Thursday regarding the protest’s impact in the state.
According to Mr. Ndukwe, Enugu State is calm and very peaceful today.
“The police have witnessed commendable cooperation from residents across all areas today.
“We appeal for this cooperation to continue.
“The command urges all residents to go about their legitimate businesses, as police operatives and sister security agencies are prepared to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state,” Mr. Ndukwe stated.
The police spokesman emphasized that operatives are present throughout the state, noting that the command has not received any negative reports from any individuals or groups.
Residents of Enugu metropolis have largely shunned the national hunger protest, as major roads and streets remain calm.
Most residents have stayed indoors, with many malls and shops in the coal city closed, resulting in minimal vehicular movement.
A trader at Mayor Market along Agbani Road, Obi Asika, who opened his shop, said, “I have monitored the situation and noticed it is calm, which is why I opened my shop for my daily business.”
A commercial tricycle operator, Ndu Maduka, mentioned that he is operating within his local vicinity for now and will continue to monitor the situation.
Recall that the organizers of the national hunger protest have scheduled the event to last from August 1st to August 10th.
