The Enugu State government has inaugurated the Christ The King Airport Hillview Neighborhood Watch to enhance security in the area.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Commissioner of the Ministry of Human Development and Poverty Eradication, Enugu State, stated that the neighborhood watch will aid in local intelligence gathering, enabling security agencies to better serve the community.
The Commissioner, represented by the State Head of Neighborhood Watch, Mr. Uchenna Ozomgbachi, emphasized that the inauguration would empower residents to look after their locality and appropriately report to the police and government.
Mr. Ozomgbachi assured the community that the state government would consistently support the neighborhood watch with relevant training and equipment. “After their inauguration today, they will have the authority to assist security agencies, particularly the police, in protecting lives and property in this area.”
In his remarks, the chairman of the neighborhood, John Harry C. Nwosu, described the new initiative as a vital contribution to community policing.
Nwosu seized the opportunity to urge the state government to assist in repairing local roads and encouraged residents to support the Neighborhood Watch in promoting a peaceful atmosphere.
“It’s a way to protect our neighborhood since there’s no nearby police station. This initiative helps us manage our environment while keeping the police informed. This is our contribution to community policing, ensuring the area is secure.
“We call on the people of the neighborhood to engage in our programs. Our roads are not in great condition, and we urge the government to help us, as we’ve been relying on community efforts to make them passable.”
In a similar vein, the secretary of the Christ the King neighborhood association, Mr. Ikenna Ani, stated that the organization would address “the growing security challenges we face in our environment.
“We’ve experienced incidents of theft, burglary, the vandalization of our transformer, and the presence of undocumented individuals in our area. We’re hopeful that this initiative will help mitigate these issues.”
Also present at the inauguration were the DPO of Thinkers Corner Police Station, Adepoju Sunday Lucas, as well as the landlords of Christ The King Neighborhood.
