The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed an attack by gunmen on a military checkpoint along the Amangwu axis of the Amasiri-Owutu Road in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the incident, stating that the command received reports from Owutu Police Division indicating that hoodlums attacked the military checkpoint in the early hours of Friday, firing shots indiscriminately.
Ukandu noted that the command was not yet briefed on any casualties but affirmed that “the attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen operating on a motorcycle.”
Quoting community sources, LEADERSHIP reports that a soldier was killed during the attack, and one of the gunmen was also shot dead by soldiers.
“There was an attack this morning at the Amangwu Military Checkpoint, resulting in two fatalities. From the information available, a soldier was killed, and one of the gunmen was also killed by the soldiers,” the source said.
The attack has sparked panic and apprehension in the area, leaving motorists and commuters on the road stranded for several hours before normalcy was restored.
