Two individuals were shot in Suleja, Niger State, on Monday when anti-riot police intervened in a protest near the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
A report by Daily Trust said the incident occurred around 9 a.m. as youths attempted to stage a demonstration in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that police and soldiers were deployed to manage traffic and disperse the protesters, using gunfire and tear gas to control the crowd.
Among those shot was Ismaila Dahiru, a local scrap worker, who was reportedly struck in the chest by a masked policeman.
Ali Adamu, a relative of Dahiru, asserted that the shooting took place despite nearby soldiers warning the officer, emphasizing that Dahiru was not part of the protest.
In addition to Dahiru, another individual was shot in the abdomen.
Both victims were initially taken to Umaru Musa Yaradua Hospital in Sabon-Wuse and were later referred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada for further treatment.
Efforts to reach Muhammad Sani Musa, the police area commander in Suleja, for a comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls.
