In a decisive ruling, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has dismissed the Edo State House of Assembly’s appeal, reaffirming that Comrade Philip Shaibu retains his role as Deputy Governor of Edo State.
The court upheld an earlier decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which declared Shaibu’s impeachment invalid and mandated his immediate reinstatement. The judges issued a stern warning: any individual who attempts to assume the title of Deputy Governor will face legal repercussions.
This judgment comes in the wake of Shaibu’s controversial impeachment on April 8, where the Assembly leveled serious accusations against him, including perjury and leaking government secrets. However, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court ruled that the impeachment process violated due process, leading to the restoration of Shaibu’s office.
Furthermore, the court nullified the appointment of Omobayo Godwins as the new Deputy Governor and directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure Shaibu’s security as he resumes his duties until the completion of his term.
The political landscape of Edo State hangs in the balance, as this ruling not only reinforces Shaibu’s position but also casts a shadow over the actions of the Assembly.
