An alarming increase in passport fees has been sanctioned by the federal government of Nigeria, set to take effect on September 1, 2024.
This unsettling development was announced by DCI Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in a statement released on Wednesday.
Udo indicated that this decision is a desperate maneuver by the federal government to uphold the quality and integrity of the once-revered Nigerian Standard Passport.
“Under this review, the cost of a 32-page Passport booklet with a 5-year validity, previously set at Thirty-five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00), has now spiraled to an astonishing Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00).
Meanwhile, the 64-page Passport booklet, valid for a decade, which was once Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00), will now demand a staggering One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00).
“Fortunately, for our citizens abroad, the fees will remain unchanged,” Udo noted.
In a further statement, he expressed regret over the potential hardships this increase may cause, vowing that the government remains steadfast in its dedication to transparency and the delivery of quality service.
