What began as a little act of kindness by Ikechukwu Ezeugwu Foundation to the displaced traders at Ogige Nsukka Market in Enugu State is gradually reigniting the hopes of the traders as more organisations are coming to their aid.
JOURNALIST101 recalls that Ikechukwu Ezeugwu Foundation, in the wake of the demolition of sections of the market to give way for a proposed modern transport terminal led by its Founder, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu donated a huge sum to the affected traders.
During the visit, Dr. Ezeugwu also announced the formation of the ‘Ogigie Nsukka Traders Support Fund’ to support those affected by the development and called on good-spirited individuals and organisations to make donations to the account to help the traders stand on their feet again.
He assured potential donors that “I am signatory A and money can only be paid out from the account if I counter-sign the cheque. This is in order to ensure proper accountability at the end of the exercise.”
Following this footstep, the Catholic Deanery of Nsukka made a donation of Five Million Naira (₦5,000,000) to also support the traders.
In all, a total of 146 most vulnerable of the affected traders have received #50,000.00 each. The traders under their leadership and supervised by a representative of the Deanery selected the beneficiaries themselves.
These donations, the leadership of the market under Mrs. Ngozika Ozioko, popularly known as Mama G says has given the affected traders a reason to continue living and fend for their families. She called on other public spirited individuals and organisations who are yet to come to their aid to please do so.
