A group of prominent politicians and technocrats from Northern Nigeria, under the aegis of ‘League of Northern Democrats (LND),’ has emerged as a new political pressure group. Formed during an inaugural meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, they have urged both state and federal governments to view the recent #EndBadGovernance protest as a catalyst for change.

The group is led by Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Governor of Kano State. In a statement to journalists following the meeting, Shekarau emphasized the group’s commitment to advancing northern development through advocacy for good governance.

He announced the formation of a political committee tasked with drafting a document that outlines regional aspirations to present to politicians seeking votes. The goal is to ensure these aspirations inform their policies. Dr. Umar Ardo will convene the committee, with Emmanuel Jime serving as its secretary, and it plans to establish seven sub-committees.

Shekarau noted that the aim is to create a comprehensive document addressing long-term regional issues rather than focusing solely on immediate political cycles. He insisted that action is needed from federal, state, and local governments in response to the protests against poor governance.

In addition, Shekarau highlighted the urgent need for reforms in the education sector and improvements in security. He criticized the current practice where project decisions are made unilaterally by the executive and stressed the necessity of establishing a body to hold them accountable.

Dr. Ardo added that LND is dedicated to tackling critical issues such as insecurity, hunger, and economic challenges, rather than pursuing political appointments.

The 226-member group includes former governors, federal lawmakers, and influential businessmen. Alongside Shekarau and Ardo, notable members include Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, Sen. Ibrahim Ida, Kabir Tafida, Falalu Bello, Dr. Jamilu Isyaka Gwamna, Malam Salihu Lukman, Amb. Usman Sarki, Prof. Usman Yusuf, Muktari Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Aminu Shehu Shagari, and Murtala Shehu Yar’Adua.

In a communiqué released after the meeting, the LND resolved to prioritize political unity within the North and promote solidarity to strengthen its political influence in Nigeria. The group also intends to engage former heads of state, vice presidents, and other regional leaders for support.

LND proposed hosting a Northern political summit in Kaduna to create a platform for discussing the region’s political future, economic development, and security challenges. Strategic working groups will be established to focus on political engagement, economic growth, security, and social cohesion.
