Kebbi State House of Assembly has amended the Local Government Law of 2008, extending the tenure of elected chairmen and councillors from two to three years to strengthen the local government system.
The Assembly also passed a bill to establish the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission, which will repeal and replace the Kebbi State Local Service Board established in 1996.
Both bills were presented by Hon. Muhammad Dangoje, chairman of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Hon. Muhammad Abubakar, chairman of the Committee on Security and General Administration. They successfully passed the third reading and were approved during a session of the House yesterday in Birnin Kebbi.
After the passage, Hon. Dangoje who spoke to journalists, explained that “the first bill aims to amend the Kebbi State Local Government Law of 2008, specifically to increase the tenure of elected local government council members. This amendment is designed to provide stability and continuity in local government administration, enabling council members to implement long-term development projects.
“The second bill establishes the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission, replacing the existing Local Government Service Board. This new commission will oversee the management of local government staff, ensuring professionalism and efficiency in service delivery.
Dangoje added that the “passage of these bills marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to reform its local government system. The proposed amendments and the establishment of the commission are expected to improve service delivery, accountability, and transparency in local government administration.
He emphasized that the House’s commitment to strengthening local government reflects its dedication to grassroots development and the well-being of the citizens of Kebbi State.
Dangoje further highlighted that the implementation of these bills is eagerly anticipated to bring about positive change in the state’s local government system.
