The Enugu State Development Association (ESDA) is gearing up for a momentous celebration, marking 33 years since the birth of Enugu State, a milestone achieved by the military junta under General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida on August 27th, 1991.
Originally known as the Wawa Peoples Movement, this group was at the forefront of the passionate struggle for statehood, a journey filled with challenges and triumphs.
In a press briefing on Monday, HRH Igwe Ezeudo Sir Abel Nwobodo, the association’s President General, articulated their intentions to honor the creation of the state and the myriad blessings it has brought, emphasizing the arduous path that led to this achievement.
Igwe Nwobodo, who also serves as the traditional ruler of Umuawalagu-Nara in Nkanu East LGA, passionately reflected on the significance of the moment that sparked the vision for a new state — a place where the Wawa people could find peace, prosperity, and a true sense of belonging.
He shared the historical roots of the Wawa state movement, which took flight soon after the war. “It solidified into a reality in 1991,” the nonagenarian noted, “thanks to the tireless efforts of our committed members.”
Highlighting the necessity for the new state, Igwe Nwobodo remarked, “This movement was driven by a noble vision for the emancipation of a people with a calling to destiny. It stood on the steadfast pillars of equity, fairness, and justice, fiercely championed by our founding fathers for the liberation of Wawaland.”
Today’s Enugu State is a testament to the resilient spirit of those who dared to dream of freedom from the shackles of modern oppression. “The essence of our struggle was to forge a state for the Wawa-speaking community, a domain where they could pursue their ambitions in education, business, science, and technology—an abode founded on peace, development, and unyielding justice.”
Following the achievement of statehood in 1991, the Wawa State movement evolved into the Enugu State Development Association (ESDA), with Igwe Nwobodo being a long-time member even before his tenure as Permanent Secretary.
The association also pays tribute to the unwavering commitment and sacrifices made by the founding fathers of Enugu State. “Because of them, Wawa land has found its voice in Nigeria. Thanks to their courage, we now embrace a future we can all take pride in.”
As the celebration approaches, it’s essential to reflect on their sacrifices and acknowledge the current state of our nation. We cherish the contributions of eminent figures who fought for the emancipation of the Wawa people and the creation of Enugu State, including Barr. Charles Abangwu, Chief C.C Onoh, Chief Barr. Enechi Onyia, and many others who played pivotal roles in this transformative journey.
“The efforts of these unsung heroes in the formation of Enugu State are celebrated and appreciated,” Igwe Nwobodo affirmed.
In a forward-looking spirit, ESDA acknowledges the current governor, Peter Mbah, for his dedication to realizing the dreams of the people of Enugu State and the Wawa community. His administration has worked vigorously to provide equitable opportunities for all citizens, fostering a peaceful and secure environment for prosperity,” Igwe Nwobodo stated.
Dr. GO Ajah echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the upcoming celebration is not merely a retrospective but a recognition of the accomplishments achieved as a state—transformations that would have been unattainable without the establishment of Enugu State.
Mark your calendars! The grand event to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of Enugu State will take place on August 27, 2024, at Okpara Square, starting at 10 AM.
