An Ogun Special Cultism Court in Abeokuta sentenced a 30-year-old man, Tope Mutairu, to seven years in prison for belonging to a secret cult.
Magistrate O.L. Oke determined that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, finding the defendant guilty as charged.
Oke emphasized that the evidence presented by the prosecution was compelling and ordered Mutairu to serve his full sentence without the option of a fine.
Mutairu faced two counts: conspiracy and membership in an unlawful society.
Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Olaide Rawlings informed the court that the defendant committed the offenses on September 3, 2023, at Olodo Junction in the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Rawlings stated that the police received information about a meeting of Eiye Confraternity members, led by Mutairu, taking place at Olodo Junction. The police apprehended Mutairu, while the other cult members managed to escape.
The offenses violated Sections 45(b) and 36 of the Secret Cults Prohibition and Special Provisions Law of Ogun State, 2016.
