The People of Obegueze Amankanu Amurri Autonomous Community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State have urged the State Government to take control of unused lands in their area that have been exploited by criminal elements.
The community made this plea during a general meeting on Monday at St. Anne’s Primary School, Obegueze Amankanu Amurri.
In his statement, the traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Igwe Linus H.C. Nwobodo, expressed concern that criminal activities, including the illegal sale of land, kidnapping, robbery, and other social vices, are on the rise in their community. He noted that these criminals are tarnishing the community’s reputation by using its name in their illicit activities.
The Igwe emphasized that while the community has done its best to combat these crimes, additional support from the State Government is crucial to effectively address the situation.
He commended Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his exemplary leadership and commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, referring to him as “Oji Egbe Eje Agha.”
“We are united in our efforts to put an end to illegal activities that bring shame to our community,” he stated.
He continued, “The recent rise in incidents like kidnapping and the unauthorized sale of land is unacceptable. Proper verification of land ownership is essential before any sales occur.
“We, as a community, cannot benefit from profits gained from the sale of illegally sold land, and we are committed to ensuring that thorough verifications are conducted to determine the rightful owners before any transactions.
“We have many unused lands in our area, and since all land ultimately belongs to the government, we want the State Government to reclaim those lots, particularly those used by criminals as hideouts.
“We appreciate the leadership of Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who has been diligent in fulfilling his promises. He is the ‘Oji Egbe Eje Agha’ we admire.”
The monarch also urged the people of Obegueze Amankanu Amurri to cultivate goodwill among themselves, emphasizing that their progress depends on maintaining harmony within the community.
President-General Hon. Victor Okechukwu remarked that the meeting was necessary due to escalating insecurity, warning that if left unchecked, it could lead to severe consequences for the community.
He pointed out that many of the community’s unused lands are being exploited by criminals to perpetrate evil, making it imperative for the State Government to intervene for the benefit of all.
“These lands, which were once a blessing to our community, have become a curse due to ongoing criminal activities. It is no longer solely about unused land; it is about the safety and security of our people. We need the government’s assistance to transform these areas into resources that serve everyone, rather than allowing them to be exploited by criminals.”
Hon. Okechukwu also reiterated the community’s resolve to address the Fulani incursions into their land, citing their connections to various crimes against the citizens.
He emphasized the need for unity and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace among conflicting villages, noting that all pending court cases have been withdrawn and out-of-court settlements reached.
He called upon the good people of Obegueze Amankanu Amurri to support Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration, as he has proven through his leadership that he is a transformative force for the state.
“In these trying times, we must not remain divided. Our unity is our strength, and only by coming together can we tackle the challenges facing our community. We have made great progress by resolving disputes amicably, and I believe this spirit of cooperation will continue to guide us toward a safer and more prosperous community.
“I urge all our sons and daughters around the world to support Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for he has demonstrated his readiness for transformative leadership and the advancement of our beloved state.
“He has consistently shown that he is an answered prayer for our state.”
Chief Lazarus Mbaagu, another community leader, commended Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his multiple interventions, stating that they are among the reasons the community still thrives.
He noted that the Governor has been deploying security forces to clamp down on criminals and other troublemakers threatening the community.
Chief Mbaagu stated that the community is willing to offer more land to the State Government for infrastructural development.
“We understand the significance of development, and by offering these lands to the government, we are not only protecting our community but also creating opportunities for growth and advancement. The infrastructural projects that could be initiated here would not only generate jobs but also improve the living standards of our residents.
“We are committed to supporting Governor Mbah’s vision for Enugu State. His dedication to the welfare of our people is clear, and as a community, we are prepared to partner with the government to ensure that peace and development thrive in Obegueze Amankanu Amurri.”
