The Department of State Services (DSS) has redeployed Peter Afunanya, its Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications.

Afunanya announced this change during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday but did not disclose his next assignment, stating that the redeployment was a routine exercise within the agency.

Having worked in the media section of the DSS for over 10 years, Afunanya joined the agency at a time when it was grappling with credibility issues approximately six years ago.

The agency was without a spokesperson for several years following the compulsory retirement of Marilyn Ogar in 2015.

Ogar’s removal came after investigations into allegations of bribery and professional misconduct against her. She was accused of accepting several truckloads of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) as bribes, among other breaches of service codes, but she denied all allegations, maintaining her innocence.

Following his redeployment announcement, Afunanya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the spokesperson for the covert security agency.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the Service and the country, pledging to give his best in whatever role he is assigned.

Afunanya stated he would carry out his duties “with love, loyalty, honour, and glory” in service to the nation.

The newly appointed Director-General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, took office last Thursday, vowing to refocus the Service on its covert operations and to embrace silence.

Prior to his appointment, Ajayi served as the director in Kogi State and committed to addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s economic, political, and security environments.
