An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) with the Ekiti State Police Command has been killed by a hit-and-run driver.

The officer, identified as Idris Lawal, was reportedly crushed at a checkpoint located at Ayemi Garage along Iworoko Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The incident occurred during a stop-and-search operation around 11 p.m. on Monday.

Despite being rushed to the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for treatment, he was pronounced dead by the attending doctors.

According to an internal police memo regarding the incident, his body has been transferred to the morgue for an autopsy.

The vehicle involved was described as an unmarked white Mercedes Benz.

The police have stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the driver responsible for this tragic incident.
