The Govspend website reveals that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Nigerian government recorded spending N171 million on rehabilitating Alau Dam in Borno State.

The Nigerian government reported spending N26 million in July 2024 on rehabilitation work at the dam.

Payments amounting to N171 million were made from June 2023 to July 2024.

On June 4, N23.4 million was disbursed for the dam rehabilitation.

An additional examination revealed that N122.4 million was expended on September 20th for the rehabilitation of the Alau Dam.

Hammal and Partners Limited received the contract.

On July 29, 2024, an additional N26 million was allocated for rehabilitation efforts, slightly more than a month before the flooding that resulted in the destruction of valuable property and assets in Borno State.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also confirmed that more than 200,000 people were displaced.

The whereabouts of an unknown number of individuals, including children, remain unknown.

Numerous properties such as houses, farmlands, and business establishments have also been destroyed.

Flooding has engulfed both residential and commercial zones, impacting the popular Monday Market along with thousands of residences and properties. Notable areas affected include the Palace of the Shehu of Borno, as well as Shehuri, Gwange, Adamkolo, Gamboru, Fori, Bulabulin, Post Office areas, Moromoro, and Customs Bridge, among others.

Several residents previously interviewed by SaharaReporters verified that extensive flooding had inundated numerous homes, major roads, and official structures, including the Emir’s palace.

In early September, the Alau Dam, which provides irrigation and tap water to Maiduguri and the Jere Local Government Area, began to display signs of instability, leading to damage in surrounding farmland and communities.

However, the government’s reaction fell short, leading the public to falsely believe that the situation was being managed.

Reports indicate that a minimum of 30 people have died as a result of the incidents.
