Nigerians’ hopes of accessing cheaper fuel through Dangote Refinery have been thwarted, as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced that petrol sourced from the facility will be priced above N1,000 per litre in the northern regions.

NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye revealed this on Monday in a statement titled, “NNPC Ltd Releases Estimated Pump Prices of PMS from Dangote Refinery Based on September 2024 Pricing.”

According to the statement, prices may reach N1,019 per litre in Borno State and N999.22 in Abuja, Sokoto, Kano, and other locations. In the southern states such as Oyo and Rivers, the price will be N960 per litre, with Lagos and its surrounding areas seeing the lowest price at N950.

The statement included the following:

“NNPC Ltd has released estimated prices of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, obtained from the Dangote Refinery, which will be applied at its retail stations across the country.

“Furthermore, NNPC Ltd emphasizes that, in accordance with the Petroleum Industry Act, PMS prices are not determined by the government but are negotiated between parties at arm’s length,” he stated.

The company clarified that the petrol loaded on Sunday was purchased in dollars.

“NNPC Ltd confirms that payment to Dangote Refinery for September 2024 PMS offtake is being made in USD; naira transactions will only begin on October 1, 2024.

“NNPC Ltd assures that if there are disputes regarding the quoted pricing, any discounts from the Dangote Refinery will be fully passed on to the public,” the statement added.

He noted that the estimated pump prices of PMS were sourced from the Dangote Refinery and will be implemented across NNPCL retail stations nationwide, based on September 2024 pricing.

It is worth recalling that the Dangote Group had contested NNPC’s claim on Sunday, asserting that it was selling PMS at N898, but did not provide its own pricing list.
