The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is not in their custody.

This statement was made on Wednesday, following a claim from the ex-governor’s media office, which stated that he had voluntarily surrendered and was being detained at the EFCC facility.

The media office elaborated, “He was accompanied to the EFCC Headquarters by prominent Nigerians.

“We expect the Commission to act professionally and uphold his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Further details regarding his interactions with the operatives of the Anti-Graft Agency will be provided later,” the statement read.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja said, “Media reports claiming that former Kogi State Governor Mr. Yahaya Bello is currently in the EFCC holding facility are incorrect. The Commission wishes to clarify that Bello is not in our custody.

“Bello is already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged money laundering amounting to N80.2 billion, with an active warrant for his arrest.”
