President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) due to pressing challenges facing the nation.

According to the presidency, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation at this important meeting of the UN’s deliberative, policymaking, and representative body.

“President Tinubu, who returned to Nigeria last Sunday after visits to China and the United Kingdom, wants to concentrate on domestic issues and address various challenges, particularly in light of the recent devastating flooding.

At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in key side events, and engage in bilateral meetings,” the presidency announced on Thursday.

The General Assembly convenes annually at the General Assembly Building located within the UN headquarters in New York City.

This year’s theme is “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” and the meeting will take place from September 24 to September 28, 2024.
