Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Darius Ishaku, the former governor of Taraba State, over allegations of involvement in a N27bn fraud.

Sources indicate that Ishaku, who completed his eight-year term as governor in 2023, was taken into custody at his Abuja residence early Friday morning.

Quoting a source at the Commission, Daily Trust, reports that the governor was reminded in the EFCC’s custody as of Friday night.

The  sources revealed that at least 15 charges have been filed against Ishaku, and he is expected to be arraigned in court soon as evidence against him is being compiled.

“Yes, he’s currently in our custody. We’ve been conducting a covert investigation since his departure from office. He oversaw significant financial malfeasance,”.

Another insider explained that his detention followed his failure to convincingly explain the financial irregularities that occurred during his administration.

When reached for comment, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details.

Ishaku’s arrest comes amid an ongoing conflict between the commission and former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, who is also accused of misappropriating N80.2bn.
