The political crisis in Rivers State has intensified, with the Emohua Local Government Council Secretariat going up in flames, allegedly set ablaze by thugs suspected to be supporters of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
These thugs are protesting the results of the recent local government elections.
This incident follows similar attacks on two other LGA secretariats in Eleme and Ikwerre. Armed thugs reportedly stormed the buildings after Governor Siminialayi Fubara swore in new council chairmen. In Eleme, parts of the secretariat were destroyed, and in Ikwerre, the chairman’s office was set on fire.
There are also growing reports of widespread looting in council offices across the state, with office equipment and materials being stolen by mobs in multiple local government areas.
These violent acts began after the withdrawal of police from LGA premises, following an order from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for security personnel to vacate the council gates.
