A faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as its new acting national chairman.
This announcement was made by the party’s national publicity secretary, Hon. Debo Ologungaba, who had previously declared the suspension of Amb. Illiya Damagum and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the acting national chairman and national secretary, respectively.
It is important to note that in a counter-move, Ologungaba himself was suspended by the Amb. Damagum-led faction of the PDP in a statement released late Thursday night.
However, on Friday, Ologungaba stated, “Following the suspension of His Excellency Amb. Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman.
“This appointment, which takes immediate effect, is in accordance with the provisions of the PDP Constitution as amended in 2017.
“The NWC urges all organs, leaders, critical stakeholders, and members of our esteemed Party to remain united and focused during this critical period, especially as we make arrangements for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024.”
The ongoing crisis within the PDP has seemingly fractured its national leadership, as NWC members have engaged in mutual suspensions over allegations of anti-party activities over the past twelve hours.
This wave of ‘suspensions’ has further divided the NWC into factions: one camp, led by the beleaguered acting national chairman Damagum and supported by national secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and another faction comprising Hon. Debo Ologungaba and national legal adviser Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN.
