An angry mob has reportedly beaten a man named John Udoh, a suspected burglar, to death in the Sagamu area of Ogun State.

Udoh, along with his gang, allegedly invaded the Aruba community in Sagamu at midnight, breaking into the home of Emeka Ruben and stealing a Lifan rubber motorbike valued at N1.2 million.

Our correspondent learned that the victim’s cries for help drew the attention of local youths, who apprehended two suspects: Peter Ubong, a 22-year-old from Cross River, and John Udoh, along with their operational motorcycle, marked SGM 387 WB.

While three members of the gang managed to escape, the mob captured the two and severely beat them. The attack resulted in Udoh’s death, while Ubong was hospitalized.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday. She noted that the suspects “were beaten severely by the mob, with John Udoh being pronounced dead by doctors at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, where his body was subsequently deposited in the morgue.”

Odutola reported that the second suspect, Peter Ubong, is in critical condition at the hospital.

She stated: “The arrested duo confessed to being part of a five-member group responsible for the theft of fifteen solar street lights previously stolen from the community, as well as two other motorcycles. They provided the names of their accomplices involved in crimes in Ajaka, a subdivision of Sagamu, and admitted to committing additional burglaries in the area.”

Odutola added that police are actively working to track down the remaining suspects and recover the stolen motorcycle.
