The Abia State Government has announced that it will begin paying its workers the new minimum wage of N70,000 starting this October.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made the announcement following a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Governor Otti.

Kanu emphasized that this decision reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of civil servants in the state, in line with the Federal Government’s approval of the new minimum wage.

“The state government is dedicated to the minimum wage, and payment will commence in the coming days,” Kanu stated.

He also pointed out that while the national minimum wage serves as a benchmark, the state is open to making adjustments as needed.

“If the Governor chooses to exceed the national standard and offer higher pay, then we will support that,” Kanu added.

Confirming this development, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, reiterated that Abia State is prepared to implement the N70,000 minimum wage for its workers.
