Northern political leaders are faced with a challenging decision as they contemplate potential candidates for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Sources indicate that economic hardship, escalating youth discontent, and unmet expectations from President Bola Tinubu’s administration are shaping this dilemma.

Despite their backing of Tinubu in the 2023 election, many Northern leaders feel the North has yet to reap sufficient rewards from this alliance, particularly as the region grapples with economic challenges more acutely than others.

These concerns are heightened by vivid memories of widespread youth protests, such as those sparked by the #EndBadGovernance movement, which saw significant participation from the North.

Leaders are apprehensive that ongoing dissatisfaction could ignite further unrest, prompting them to actively seek candidates who can credibly challenge the presidency.

Sources close to Northern politicians reveal that prominent figures from the North-West are holding discussions to pinpoint a strong contender capable of mounting a serious challenge to President Tinubu.

While no final decisions have been reached, insiders report that Northern leaders are also considering several Southern politicians who might run against Tinubu.

In weighing their options, the leaders are vetting potential Northern running mates, including former Kano State Governor Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and ex-Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, among others.

However, the Northern bloc remains cautious of possible opposition strategies centered on zoning and regional loyalties, particularly since any Southern-backed candidate must contend with Tinubu’s entrenched influence and resources.

This debate underscores growing concerns that continued support for Tinubu in 2027 could alienate the Northern youth, who are increasingly vocal about pressing issues like unemployment, inflation, and insecurity.

Many Northern leaders are reportedly reluctant to endorse Tinubu again, fearing that an unchanged administration could undermine their connection with younger constituents.

“A credible person from the North-West is likely to be chosen as the running mate.

“For now, Northern politicians are still in search of a reputable candidate for 2027. Many, however, are unlikely to support the current administration again,” a source told Nigerian Tribune.
