The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday that a lawmaker has been arrested for assaulting a driver in the nation’s capital.

Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja Command, confirmed that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh is now in custody.

She stated, “Ikwechegh is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”

According to the police spokesperson, the cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, filed a report with the Command.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose over the delivery method. During this confrontation, Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command expresses serious concern regarding Hon. Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly contemptuously said, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ demonstrating a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.

“The suspect is currently at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” the statement continued.

The statement noted that Olatunji Disu, the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Once the investigation is complete, appropriate legal action will be taken.”
