Following the sack of Erik ten Hag on Monday, former Man United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as interim manager.
Nistelrooy, who served as an assistant to the recently removed coach, will lead the team until a more experienced manager is secured for the role.
United revealed his temporary appointment alongside the announcement of Ten Hag’s sacking.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and guided the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has contributed during his time with us and wish him all the best in the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the existing coaching staff, while we search for a permanent head coach.”
Gary Neville, a former teammate of Nistelrooy, believes he has the potential to repair the struggling squad during his brief tenure.
Neville told Sky Sports: “He can reframe the team’s strategy. There’s a possibility he could shift the team’s dynamics slightly.
“However, having been on the bench with Erik ten Hag, I’d be surprised if we see anything drastically different in the next few games.
“I believe there is a significant amount of work to be done with these players, as they are currently in desperate need of improvement.”
