Bianca Ojukwu

The recent nomination of Iyom Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has generated varied responses. Some have expressed concerns that the current government may be attempting to secure Igbo votes in 2027. This school of thought has prompted certain Igbos to assert that Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu possesses minimal political significance, notwithstanding her party’s status as the ruling party in Anambra State since 2003, its victory in Imo State alongside Rochas Okorocha, and its considerable advancements in other states within the South East and beyond. The most surprising pushback originated from the APC Anambra State Chapter, the state that Bianca is supposedly representing, stating that it fostered a perception of “APC not rewarding loyalty” and demoralising.” Hmm!

In any case, her appointment transcends politics, as it is advantageous for Nigeria to have representatives with distinguished careers in their designated oversight posts. Iyom Bianca is an ideal candidate for this position, having held the job of Ambassador to both Ghana and Spain. Furthermore, we have collectively encouraged the government to guarantee that the ministerial appointment process is “beyond reproach” and to refrain from selecting candidates based on their political loyalty or party affiliations instead of prioritising their competences. This appointment not only employed the doctrine of reasonableness but also indicates that the government appears to be heeding those critiques.

Amazingly, officials from the educational boards affiliated with Iyom Bianca have indicated that she has exhibited sincere engagement in her duties. Their greatest admiration for Iyom stemmed from her adeptness at managing her obligations efficiently. This is consistent with our call for the government to consistently prioritise quality over party affiliation. Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, desire a minister who will advocate for Nigerian foreign policy while maintaining pragmatism. As Ambassador, her commitment to rectifying injustices was notable as she effectively enhanced the living conditions of Nigerians in Spain.

At this juncture, I must withdraw my submission, as it does not aim to elevate the reputation of an already esteemed individual. Consequently, it is exceedingly challenging to forecast her future—or, more precisely, the future of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under her stewardship—without a semblance of amplified optimism as against cautious optimism. The apprehension that the APC and its leadership might tarnish her reputation primarily stems from certain disreputable groups who have exacerbated the security issues in Igboland.

Numerous political pundits have proposed that we should expect a transformation in the political environment. According to them, they argued that APGA, her political party, is functioning with a limited foundation and has been endeavoring to broaden its constituencies. Will this result in a shift from our longstanding philosophy to reality, specifically the acknowledgement that having six is preferable to having none? Time shall tell.

Personally, I will consistently promote the readiness to cooperate with others toward common goals, regardless of any party or political disparities. I must concur with the political leadership’s acknowledgement that, in a democracy, complete agreement is unattainable and that in specific situations, collaboration with the governing authority is essential to enhance national governance. In light of this context, I unequivocally endorse Amb Bianca Ojukwu’s choice to accept the offer and serve in the current administration. Considering the decisions made in 2023 and the strong connections between her deceased spouse, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Eze-Igbo Gburu Gburu 1, and Mr. Peter Obi, her willingness to serve the nation does not constitute a betrayal of Ndigbo or Mr. Peter Obi.
