The Court of Appeal in Abuja has officially discharged and acquitted former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen of the charges that led to his dismissal in 2019.
On January 25, 2019, just 29 days before the presidential elections, former President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen and appointed the next most senior Supreme Court jurist, Justice Tanko Muhammad, as his replacement.
Recently, President Bola Tinubu, through the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, successfully urged the appellate court to put a stop to the ongoing hearings of three separate appeals that Onnoghen filed to contest his removal, conviction, and asset seizure.
In accordance with the settlement agreement signed on October 24, the appellate court mandated the federal government to immediately unfreeze Onnoghen’s account with Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited.
