Vice President Kamala Harris has officially conceded the 2024 presidential election, offering her congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump in a call on Wednesday.
This is even as president Joe Biden has reached out to congratulate President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory
A senior aide confirmed that Harris “called President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory in the 2024 presidential election, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful transition and his role as a president for all Americans.”
According to a source familiar with the call, it lasted only a few minutes.
In a statement, Trump’s campaign noted that he “acknowledged Vice President Harris for her resilience, professionalism, and determination throughout the campaign, with both leaders agreeing on the need to unify the nation.”
Harris is scheduled to deliver remarks at 4 p.m. ET at Howard University, her alma mater.
Also, the White House confirmed in a statement Wednesday that President Biden extended an invitation to Trump to meet at the White House and committed to ensuring a smooth transition of power. The president also emphasised the importance of uniting the nation, a message he plans to reiterate in a national address on Thursday.
The White House noted that Biden also spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris following her defeat in the election. Biden and Harris acknowledged the importance of a seamless transition, underscoring their commitment to facilitating cooperation and fostering stability as the incoming administration prepares to take office.
The message from Biden comes as part of a tradition in American democracy, where the outgoing administration offers its support to the newly elected leaders, with the aim of easing divisions and strengthening the country’s democratic process.
