An Enugu State magistrate court has ordered the remand of Mrs. Ada Ogbogu at the Enugu Correctional Centre for allegedly injuring her three-year-old stepson with a pestle.
During the arraignment on Tuesday, the police informed the court that Mrs. Ogbogu had committed an act causing grievous bodily harm contrary to the law, an offense that could result in life imprisonment if convicted.
The charge, referenced as CME/646C/2024, states: “That you, Ada Ogbogu, female, on the 23rd of October 2024, at approximately 2:30 PM at Ike Ani Estate, Emene Enugu, did with the intent to maim or disfigure, pour hot water on the nose and mouth of one Kaitobechukwu Ogbogu, male, aged 3 years, and strike him with a pestle, which resulted in the dislocation of his left leg and caused serious bodily harm, thereby committing an offense punishable under Section 288 (a) of the Enugu State Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II. Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.”
Chief Magistrate Alphonsus Edeh denied her bail, directing her remand at the Correctional Centre and scheduling the next hearing for November 26, 2024, when a report from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Enugu, is anticipated.
In the meantime, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, stated to the press that Mrs. Ogbogu’s arraignment aligns with the administration’s commitment to see the case through to its conclusion, asserting that no child should endure dehumanization in Enugu State.
“Recall that the State Government acted swiftly by arresting the accused, and today she is already in court. This decisive action showcases Governor Peter Mbah’s dedication to protecting children. So, if you mistreat or abuse any child in Enugu State, you will face severe consequences. Period,” she emphasized.
