A recent operation by the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA as part of the Northwest Operation FARAUTAR MUJIYA, has successfully driven the Lakurawa terrorist group into retreat in Kebbi State.
According to Zagazola, this swift and effective military campaign targeted the Lakurawa camps, resulting in the seizure of livestock and other crucial resources that had provided a significant revenue stream for the group.
Following the attack, the Lakurawa group is reportedly withdrawing towards Borgu, a strategic area near the Nigeria-Benin border. Renowned for its remote terrain and access to cross-border livestock and grain markets, Borgu has historically sheltered the group’s operations and facilitated their trade-based income sources.
This retreat appears to be a tactical move to exploit less-monitored border regions for regrouping and re-establishing their revenue streams.
Intelligence indicates that the group may continue further south toward Ilesha Bariba in Kwara State, close to the Benin border, where their illicit activities might evade closer scrutiny.
As operations persist, security forces are urged to monitor key crossings and market areas in Borgu and Ilesha Bariba to anticipate potential regrouping or the establishment of new smuggling routes that could sustain Lakurawa’s activities.
