Senator Austin Akobundu, representing the Abia Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has called for calm following the tragic attack that claimed the lives of two soldiers at a checkpoint in the Umuopara area of Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on Wednesday morning.

In a message to the affected community on Saturday, Senator Akobundu expressed his sympathy and encouraged residents to remain hopeful for a swift return to normalcy as he and other stakeholders work closely with the military and relevant agencies to regain control of the situation.

While extending his condolences to the Nigerian Army for the loss of its personnel, Senator Akobundu affirmed his confidence in the military’s professionalism in addressing this challenge.

“This is indeed a tragic situation we are facing. However, I believe in the military’s capability to manage it effectively, without causing distress to innocent citizens.

“I sincerely mourn the loss suffered by the military as a result of this attack, and I urge those responsible to seek peace and dialogue. Violence yields only chaos, anarchy, and suffering, while a harmonious society fosters progress and prosperity for all,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that gunmen had attacked military personnel at a checkpoint in Umuopara on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers in a fierce gun battle, during which the assailants abandoned two vehicles before fleeing.
